Software City 2009
What a day - what an event!  Software City in Liverpool was fabulous this year - thanks Steve Smith and the team!

We had a great reception for TakeCare there with some interesting (and trenchant) questions from the 'Dragons' - Richard Farleigh and Mark Fuller (not to mention David Bundred) making their mark for sure!

TakeWare® CogentConnections™ can quite simple make removable storage devices and mobile phones appear better, be better and be more functional for their users than ever before.

It offers the opportunity to transform the experience of unboxing and first use of a device such as a mobile phone. To change it from being a hassle fraught with pitfalls – to a delightful voyage of discovery.

And then to extend that voyage of discovery throughout the life of the phone – and also facilitate the transition to the next phone at upgrade (including facilitating the sales process.

It can:

  • Remove all the most troublesome steps now necessary to attach a mobile phone to a PC

  • Make existing and new software far more worthwhile and usable –moving with the phone and requiring no installation on any PC –and leaving zero footprint.

  • Offers the opportunity to deliver zero-installation, Plug&Go™ functionality to mobile phones and related appliances.

This can be used to:

  • Make start-up and installation a one-click process – and completely hassle free.
  • Take technical and irksome steps (such as loading drivers and software) completely away from the user
  • Actively guide the user through the ‘getting started’ phase
  • Add additional software based features and functionality that are attached to the phone (rather than any PC) and remain available wherever the phone goes (without any installation).
  • Demonstrate to and support the user enabling them to be aware of and understand the more advanced (and less obvious or intuitive) features of the device
  • Educate the user
  • Facilitate regular contact with the user – particularly at times when they are most likely be interested in offers and upgrades

Many of the problems with any digital device occur soon after it is
delivered and unboxed. This is the point when the user is most likely to have problems and least equipped to cope with them. It’s also the point at which the user forms their opinion of the device and is therefore a key point of opportunity or exposure for the brand as a whole.

This is also why returns are so high for some devices and models (as high as 40% in some sectors) and support costs are also very high.

It is difficult, time consuming and expensive to write extensive manuals that really meet the needs of unfamiliar users. Telephone and other support is even more time consuming, very expensive, as well as being frustrating for everyone involved.

Usability testing has proved that each step that can be removed from the hands of users will pay huge dividends – making the process smoother and reducing the scope for misunderstanding and problems.

TakeWare® CogentConnections™ advances the art and makes one-click start-up (and zero-click launching) a reality for the first time ever, making it possible to not only reduce the user-steps by many ‘clicks’ but transforming the interaction info a positive experience for the user while reducing costs and support load for manufacturers and suppliers.

It does so by applying the same ‘Plug&Go™’ capabilities of TakeWare® proven by BackupGenius™ (click here for more info) and other TakeWare® apps to the installation of a physical appliance such as a mobile phone.

TakeWare® is a powerful and wide ranging new technology which has been granted patents in the UK, USA and around the world.

It is a new way of thinking about and building software, which 'breaks the mould' we have all been creating since the start of the software industry.

(Please see www.TakeWare.com/faq for details of TakeWare® and  www.Backup-Master.com for information on an established and proven TakeWare® Plug&GO™ product)

What is CogentConnections™ - How does it work?

CogentConnections™ is the application of TakeWare® technologies to real physical devices – such as mobile phones and other memory devices – to radically change their usability and usage profile transforming the ‘Out-Of-The-Box’ experience and making the device better and more functional – as a range of TakeWare® based functions are now effectively part of the phone and can be accessed on any PC without installation.

This is done by creating the functions as TakeWare® apps (or converting existing apps) – which can then be delivered preloaded on the device itself – and/or downloaded or updated over the Internet.

Adding new functionality

A way of adding functionality – and connectivity that is independent of the PC, and so far more portable and flexible. These can be general purpose tools for the mass market or niche tools for specific sectors).

Wasted software, Wasted Opportunity

Much of the software delivered with phones and digital devices today never leaves the box. In an increasingly mobile world the need to install and re-install it onto whichever PC it would be used with today is simply too much trouble. Especially since this can involve unwanted interactions, license violations and it’s well known that Windows tends to slow as the number of apps installed increases – even if they are uninstalled later.

All this means that it’s ‘hardly worth the bother’ and the case has to be a compelling one to justify the effort. It’s certainly no fun!

Loaded and ready to go

TakeWare® apps by comparison can come preloaded on the device  memory (or downloaded).

Since they are already there, they’re one-click away.

Since they are never installed on any PC they can’t conflict or slow it down.

Since they reside within the phone they’re always available when needed.

They can be kept updated automatically and silently – each time the phone is Internet connected).

So: The bar has been dramatically lowered and the door is wide open to offer a new range of functionality that’s just a click away…. Or even less.

Plug&Go™ - Truly ZeroClick™

TakeWare® Plug&Go™ allows TakeWare® apps and TakeWare® enabled apps to ‘Plug&Go™’. This means that as soon as they are connected (physically of over a network) an app can pop-up offering assistance or other functionality to the user. (The only exception is the first-ever use – which requires one click for permission to be granted).

Freeing existing software

Almost any existing application can be re-tasked as a TakeWare® application using the toolkits and utilities we provide as part of the package.

This means that existing CD / PC based apps can be enabled and pre-loaded increasing their usefulness and so take-up levels, including such as:

  • MultiMedia apps
  • Synch apps
  • Organiser apps

Better Leverage

What’s more because the barriers are removed once connected, the device can effectively leverage the richer user interfaces and facilities (Screen, Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, Printer, Peripherals) – as well as crucially the Internet and web connectivity.

A real event

This is particularly important because once a connection (or ‘docking’) event is generated it can be used in a variety of ways indicating as it does (in a similar was to a web search) the presence and present activity of the user.

Presence of an Internet connection can be detected – which open the door for selective:

  • Targetted, permission based, advertising
  • Alerts
  • Targetted information

Because the app is closely associated with a particular user (rather than a PC), can be ‘self-aware’ and ‘device-aware’ it (and the info and ad-servers) can use such information to hone and channel only information that is likely to be acceptable and helpful to the particular user at that time.

For example if the user has a phone manufacturers supplied app on a non-recent phone it may be an opportune time to point them to the latest model and make an upgrade offer.

Similarly if the phone is running low on memory it is an opportunity to offer phone or memory upgrades.

What is a TakeWare® App?

TakeWare® applications have important new properties including:

  • No installation is required
  • No configuration or setup is required
  • They offer an unprecedented level of portability
  • Together with greater security
  • They remove the need for Synching
  • While not all apps will necessarily have all of these properties (by design or otherwise), taken together they remove the biggest barriers to take-up and use of software and ever increasing computing power.
  • While pretty much all that can be done has already been done to make software 'installation and setup' easier for non-techy users TakeWare® presents the opportunity to abolish these barriers altogether and deliver 'ready-to-roll' applications straight into the hands of even novice users.

Can a conventional app become a TakeWare® app?

Yes. Via variety of routes ... We have tools for this.... For some apps it's easier than others. In some cases our toolkit means it can be almost instant. Please contact us if you would like more information. Or to convert an app.

What is TakeWare® Fusion™?

A part of the TakeWare® specification (and the granted patents) Fusion™ is a technology which allows for TakeWare® apps (or collections of them) to be treated as 'virtual devices', which can then be secured against loss or damage / malfunction by copying (or cloning). This is a little like 'traditional' backup but differs in three important ways:

  • The replication is very selective (aggressively delta’d) and is near-real-time - and so is fast, complete and always up to date.
  • What is replicated can be a useable device (albeit in virtual form).
  • This can be totally automated and completely invisible to the user.

This contrasts to a traditional backup, which from this viewpoint, is typically just an occasional 'dump' of the information.

Regeneration

To reconstitute the working device (or collection of apps) they are simply downloaded onto a new piece of memory (flashdrive, net attached disc etc) and voila! The device lives again. This clearly also has advantages in other areas such as deployment.

Fusion™ is tried and proven and can be applied to both TakeWare® apps and devices and to traditional apps and PCs:

  • Combines the best of fast, local, selective, self-reintegrated replication (backup and archiving) with the security and power of online / remote replication.
  • Delivers blindingly fast speeds with a new level of security previously only achievable with huge custom IT infrastructure and all the associated costs and complexity.
  • Is able to deliver significant improvements in cost as well as speed and security as compared with existing solutions.

Also integrates the use of compression and encryption technologies to optimise speed, security and capacity.
